Honest Politics should:
- compare competitive markets, regulated private provision, public ownership, public stakes, mutual structures and partnerships case by case;
- focus on resilience, maintenance, capacity and long-term value;
- strengthen accountability in natural monopolies and essential networks;
- avoid arbitrary confiscation or ideologically driven restructuring;
- ensure any acquisition or ownership change is lawful, fairly valued and compared with regulatory alternatives;
- give local and devolved institutions real responsibility where they are better placed to deliver.

Main cost and strongest objection
Changing ownership or regulation can require substantial public capital, compensation, transition management and specialist capability. Leaving existing structures in place can also preserve poor incentives or weak accountability.
The strongest objection: that case-by-case ownership sounds sensible but may avoid a clear answer when essential services are failing and urgent intervention is needed.
What could change this direction
The direction should change where a different ownership or regulatory model has a demonstrably stronger case on reliability, affordability, investment, accountability and transition risk.
Before this becomes a developed proposal
The policy must identify a precise problem, realistic options, evidence, rights, distribution, cost, delivery responsibility, territorial scope, evaluation and stopping conditions. A stronger public status cannot be created by wording alone.
