Economy, tax and public finances

Build a more productive, competitive and investment-friendly economy while keeping the public finances resilient.

Current direction

Build a more productive, competitive and investment-friendly economy while keeping the public finances resilient.

Honest Politics should support:

  • making it easier to start, invest in and grow a productive business;
  • stable and comprehensible taxation;
  • scrutiny of reliefs, regulations and spending for growth, revenue, distribution, behaviour and administrative burden;
  • lower taxation where essential services, valuable investment and fiscal credibility can still be protected;
  • borrowing for severe shocks and well-founded investment rather than routine avoidance of trade-offs;
  • transparent fiscal rules that acknowledge uncertainty and prevent accounting games;
  • fair enforcement against evasion and artificial arrangements;
  • competition and reform where concentrated power blocks entry, productivity or consumer value.

Not yet settled

  • tax rates and thresholds;
  • exact fiscal rule;
  • departmental spending totals;
  • debt target;
  • treatment of individual reliefs;
  • detailed business-tax reform.

Main cost and strongest objection

Some pro-growth reforms create short-term fiscal costs, transition burdens or losses for groups benefiting from the current system. Fiscal restraint also means declining worthwhile proposals when they cannot be funded responsibly.

The strongest objection: that broad support for growth, simpler taxation and fiscal resilience does not yet identify who would pay more, which services would receive priority or how the movement would respond to a recession.

What could change this direction

A direction should change if credible analysis shows that the preferred reform weakens productive investment, worsens long-term fiscal resilience or imposes concentrated losses that cannot be justified or mitigated.

Before this becomes a developed proposal

The policy must identify a precise problem, realistic options, evidence, rights, distribution, cost, delivery responsibility, territorial scope, evaluation and stopping conditions. A stronger public status cannot be created by wording alone.

Challenge this position

Relevant evidence, delivery experience, factual corrections and serious objections can be submitted through the evidence route.
