Current direction
Maintain credible national defence, place NATO at the centre of collective security and match commitments with personnel, equipment, industry and resilience.
Honest Politics should support:
- a NATO-first defence posture;
- stronger European capability and burden sharing;
- force design based on current threats and actual deployability;
- resilient procurement and domestic industrial capacity where strategically justified;
- protection of service personnel and families;
- cyber, space, infrastructure and supply-chain resilience;
- international engagement that serves security, prosperity and lawful commitments;
- retention of the nuclear deterrent unless a safer credible alternative can meet the same strategic requirement.
Qualification
The deterrent position is a strong current direction, not an exemption from review. Cost, safety, doctrine, escalation and changing technology must continue to be examined.

Main cost and strongest objection
Credible defence requires large, persistent expenditure and opportunity cost. Procurement, nuclear capability and overseas commitments carry financial, strategic, safety and escalation risks.
The strongest objection: that a NATO-first posture and retained nuclear deterrent may lock Britain into expensive capabilities and commitments without proving they are the best response to changing threats.
What could change this direction
The direction should change if a safer credible alternative can meet the same strategic requirement, or if capability, alliance and fiscal evidence no longer justify the present posture.
Before this becomes a developed proposal
The policy must identify a precise problem, realistic options, evidence, rights, distribution, cost, delivery responsibility, territorial scope, evaluation and stopping conditions. A stronger public status cannot be created by wording alone.
